AbstractThis thesis presents the results of an investigation of the shear strength characteristics of Bangkok subsoils in the weathered soft. and stiff clay zone under Ko anisotropic consolidation condition. Undisturbed samples taken from the depths of 1.5 m, 4.5 m, 5: 5 m, 6.5 m, 9.5 -10.1 m and 10.5 -11.1 m were tested under consolidated undrained condition with pore pressure measurements. The results lead to the following conclusions. 1. Critical pressure existed in weathered, soft and stiff clay. 2. In the nonalloy consolidated range, a unique normalized stress strain relationship is observed. 3. Normalized behaviour do not exist in the apparently over consolidated range and the stress-strain relationships are dependent upon the AOCR. 4. In the apparent over consolidated range, the value of Af is found to be less than that in the normally consolidated range. 5. Undrained shear strength is a function of the consolidation pressure. 6. The normalized deviator stress, the normalized excess pore pressure, and the effective principal stress ratio decreased with increasing consolidation pressure until the consolidation pressure was equal to or greater than the critical pressure, but the value of Af increased with increasing consolidation pressure.
