AbstractTwo full scale test embankments were constructed, one on the vertical sand drains and the other on the untreated ground. Foundation soil beneath both the embankments are composed of a thick deposit of recent marine deltaic clay of low strength and high compressibility (Bangkok clay within AIT campus) overlaying beds of sand and gravel Prior to the construction both the test sites were heavily instrumented to monitor the settlement, pore pressure and lateral ground movement due to the embankment construction. The settlement of the embankment on the sand drain area was analyzed by the oedometer test results using Terzaghils method of one dimensional settlement analysis and Barron's method of vertical consolidation due to radial drainage, Also the settlement of the embankment on the untreated ground was analyzed using Terzaghi's method of one dimensional analysis and Davis and Poulos1s method of three dimensional settlement analysis. The results of analysis show that the predicted time- settlement relationship in case of both the test embankments were slower than the observed time settlement. From the log time - settlement relationship and pore pressure readings with time show that the subsoil under both the embankments has undergone a substantial amount of consolidation settlement during the test period of 186 days.
