Abstract | The major part of these studies undertakes a review of the design, construction, testing and evaluation of soil and rock anchors. Three case histories were sununarised and discussed to study the performance of anchor-s. The findings of a literature review of anchor design are presented to give a synopsis of the numerous empirical techniques available for predicting anchor capacity. It revealed that there does not exist at present any general reliable method to determine satisfactorily the bearing capacity of anchor in soil and rock. The bearing capacity estimated by the conventional method i.e. inverted cone or bond between grout/rock interface is not accurate. No reliable theoretical approach has yet been developed. It is also revealed that one factor that has a profound influence on the anchor capacity is the method of construction. In order to ensure the performance of each anchor is satisfactory, in situ testing of anchor is essential. Summaries on current code of practice on testing of anchor were also made. The studies also revealed that there is a lack of information on the long term behaviour of anchor. Various parameter and phenomena which influence anchor behaviour in the long term were also discussed • |
