AbstractThe present research was conducted to assess the noise levels and to derive the control measures at the Siam Kraft Paper Company, Banpong, Thailand. The research work focussed on four areas and they are: Noise level measurement at the source; occupational noise survey; investigation of noise exposure to the employees per shift and community noise level assessment. It was concluded that source noise levels were below the prescribed standards. However, it was found that some engineering control measures were necessary for the protection of the employees from hearing damage. Occupational noise survey was carried out at 19 processing departments of the factory. The measured noise levels were found to be remarkably higher at the operator position and in the control rooms. Moreover, noise level exposures on two to three employees at each processing department were investigated during a 8-hour workshift. The survey revealed that the employees at the turbine and the compressor house and paper machines 1 and 2 were exposed to higher noise levels in the range of 90.3 to 93 dB(A) than the recommended criteria. The evaluation of the community noise /levels showed that noise levels were higher at Bachelor quarters. Finally, some engineering and administrative control measures such as enclosures for operators at paper machines 1 and 2, at the turbine and the compressor house, waste paper, pulp mill and depitcher. For boiler, strict use of ear protectors, rotation of employees and frequent medical examinations of the employees were suggested.
