AbstractA batch feed, cyclical pressure reactor has been designed for this study as a laboratory unit to simulate the deep shaft activated sludge process. The cyclical pressure of the system was operated from zero to its maximum of 75 psig. This generates a dissolved oxy gen of 17.9 to 27.6 mg/t under the cycle time of two minute and eleven seconds (i.e. 38" + 76" + 17"). The system is capable of removing 87.42 to 94.6% COD, 94.6 to 97.65% BOD5 (20°C), 27.09 to 72.9% NH3-N, and 12.96 to 14.28% total filtrable orthophosphate(T-P04). The oxygen up-take rates for MLVSS are 12.66-18.72 mg/g-h. The sludge produced from the system has a SVI of 44 to 71 mg/t and no bulking has been experienced during the operation. The dewatering specific resistance of the sludge was found to be 1.78 x 108 to 2.47 x 108 s2/g. Eleven common bacteria genera were isolated from the slud3e of the reactor, stalk and free swimming protozoa were also observed in the sludge.
