AbstractA methodology based on the multivariate factor analysis has been developed for assessing the environmental impacts caused by urbanization. The methodology focusses on the clustering of the impact parameters and then the implementation of the impact evaluation scheme which includes all the parameters identified to define the various components of urban environment. The application of the methodology and the frame for environmental impact evaluation scheme is shown to all the 37 cities in Korea. Data analysis for the years 1976 and 1979 were conducted so as to measure the impacts of urbanization during these 3 years. Also separately analyzed is the change in the level of environmental quality due to pollution. The 37 cities in Korea were finally ranked in order of urban quality as well as environmental quality. The results obtained by the use of the methodology were close to the real situation in the 37 Korean cities. In conclusion, the possibility of developing an environmental impact evaluation method based on the established mathematical principles of factor analysis for the assessment of the impacts of urbanization has been shown.
