Abstract | A locally manufactured power tiller was tested for its performance. A rope brake for measuring the input power to the power tiller axle was designed and fabricated. The tiller was mounted on a frame and one side of the axle was connected to the brake shaft by means of a flexible coupling. At full throttle setting the engine was loaded by placing weights on the brake hanger. Varying the center distance between engine pulley and transmission pulley as well as the linkage setting of the clutch lever, transmitted power for various possible combinations using two sets of belts was measured from the brake. For a particular configuration power transmission was affected significantly by change in belt tension. Sag (indicating belt tension) of 25 nun/m of center distance was found to transmit maximum power, For new belts this sag was achieved at a center distance of 78 cm and in that case the transmission efficiency was about 94%. |
