Abstract | In order to use plant analysis as an aid in diagnosing nutritional disorder in sorghum, and to investigate effects of fertilizers on the quality of grain protein, a fertilizer experiment was carried out in the Asian Institute of Technology during the dry season, (January - May), of 1980. Three levels of N (O, 75 and 150 kg/ha), P (O, 50 and 100 kg/ha) and K (O, 50 and 100 kg/ha) in all combinations were used. The results obtained for maximum DM grain yield, maximum N%, maximum protein %, maximum lysine content in grain were 4622 kg/ha, 1.921%, 12. 01% and 3.572 g.a.a./16gN respectively. Application of N, (without P), increased grain yield and concentration of N in aerial parts, except at the highest rate of N. Concentration of N in grain decreased with the medium rate but increased with the high rate of N. Application of P increased grain yield and concentration of p in aerial parts and considerably decreased total N concentration in grain. Increasing N (or crude protein) content in grain, decreased the concentration of lysine and of most other essential amino acids in the protein. K application did not affect the plants chemical composition, grain yield or concentration of N in grain at maturity. Preliminary diagnosis and yield prognosis models were developed. They demonstrated clear relationships between application of nutrients, chemical composition of the young plant and final grain yield. Diagnosis and yield prognosis were expressed quantitatively and could be tested, comparing actual yield and predicted yield. The results indicate a high reliability of the models and methods. |
