AbstractThe flow towards 2.5 cm, 5.0 cm and 7.5 cm diameter corrugated plastic drain pipes with and without envelope was investigated by means of a sand tank model, under steady state simulated· rainfall condition. Previously developed drainage formulae such as KIRKHAM's Equation and HOOGHOUDT1s Equations were tested for reliability when no envelope was used. Dimensionless equations were developed to determine the maximum water table height above the level of drain centers with and without an envelope around pipes. With the envelope the experiment was done in two different ways. First it was with a constant thickness of 11. 4 cm of the envelope. The next was with varying thickness of the envelope but the overall diameter of pipe and envelope being kept constant. From this study the effective diameters of the pipes with envelope were determined. Using the values of effective drain radius for various drain installation, the increase in spacings were computed, This was done in such a way that the new spacing produced a water table height which coincided with the water table when the pipes were without envelope and spaced at a distance of 200 cm. The computations showed that a 11. 4 cm thick envelope would allow a space increase of some 53%, 44% and 37% as compared with the plain pipe of diameters of 2.5 cm, 5.0 cm and 7.5 cm respectively. In the case of a 5.0 cm diameter pipe with 10.0 cm thick envelope and a 7.5 cm diameter pipe with 8.8 cm thick envelope, the corresponding figures were 39% and 29% respectively.
