Abstract | A finite element formulation of a beam column element, based on direct stiffness method, has been presented for geometrically nonlinear spatial analysis of arches. A new class of stiffness matrices are explicitly derived. Some of the efficient solution algorithms are described to solve the resulting nonlinear equilibrium equations, With the aid of a modern digital computer, the present formulation can be effectively used to investigate the ultimate strength and spatial failure of elastic arches having closed cross sections. |
