AbstractThe literature on lateral loading of piles has briefly been reviewed and some of the more commonly used expressions for deflection and ultimate capacity of a pile in clayey soils are given. Also described is a method which uses a lateral load tester (LLT) or pressure meter and from the result of which the modulus of horizontal subgrade reaction can be obtained. The LLT-method and a more or less empirical method, developed by Broms, are then used to predict the lateral deflection of piles which will be employed in the proposed Bangkok Mass Transit System. A good agreement between the two approaches has been obtained.
