AbstractThe extent of saltwater upcoming due to pumping in a freshwater aquifer underlain by a body of saline water has been studied with the help of a vertical Heleshaw model. Using oil and water as model liquids, observations have been made to study the effect of partial well penetration on drawdown, extent of upcoming below pumping well and the shape and extent of the interface profile and thereupon empirical relationship have been developed for their prediction under different operating conditions. Besides, some criteria have been developed for predicting the shape and extent of interface profile due to multi-well pumping .
