AbstractA numerical model based on the finite element technique is developed to determine (a) the equilibrium location of the free surface for seepage from open channel and (b) to estimate the seepage rate. Variational formulation approach is applied to obtain a numerical solution to the flow problems. The selected problem has been solved for varying depth of impermeable layer and groundwater table. The results of investigation are presented in the form of dimensionless plots, which can be used for planning and designing of an irrigation and a drainage system where seepage from an open channel is a serious problem. The finite element solution is compared with BOUWER's analog solution. The applicability of Dupuit-Forchheimer approximation is also compared with finite element solution and discrepancies in the results are discussed .
