AbstractA simplified method for the earthquake analysis of concrete gravity dams has been suggested by using a quasi-static method, which considers both the static equivalents of the maximum inertia and hydrodynamic forces exerted on the dam, and the foundation interaction effects. The basic mathematical model consists of a two-dimensional gravity dam welded to an elastic halfpence and a reservoir of constant depth extending to infinity in the up-stream direction. Assumptions and simplifications are necessary in connection with the idealization of the earthquake ground motion, the mathematical model for dam-reservoir and dam-foundation systems, the material behaviour, and also in connection with the analysis procedure. The resulting simplified method can be efficiently used for preliminary design purposes and requires only a fraction of the computer time that would be necessary for a dynamic analysis in the time or frequency domain,
