AbstractBending analysis of hyperbolic paraboloid shells by the finite element method is presented. Hyperbolic paraboloid shells with various boundary conditions and subjected to a unit normal pressure are considered in the analysis . A simple bilinear degenerate element is employed to model the shells. Shell rotations are replaced by relative displacements in describing the element displacement field. Selective reduced integration technique is used in computing the element stiffness matrix, which extends the element applications to thin shells. The solutions thus obtained are compared with the available solutions, where appropriate, to assess the accuracy and efficiency of the present study. Results are presented to facilitate the design of such structures.
