AbstractA four span continuous girder bridge subjected to spatially varying horizontal earthquake ground motions has been analyzed. The bridge with incident SH.-waves along its axis is represented by a finite element model. Soil-structure interaction effects are analyzed by using dynamic spring and dashpot constants which represent the response to the fundamental mode. The effects of spatially varying ground motions are simulated by two types of excitations, namely, travelling wave with phase shift but no modification of amplitude. stochastic excitation with phase shift and random variation of amplitude. Spectrum-compatible, artificially generated accelerogram's with identical peak accelerations have been utilized. The results clearly demonstrate the importance of the effects of spatially varying ground motions on the out-of-plane response ox the bridge and indicate that even larger differences 1Ilay be expected when it is assumed that there is also a spatial variation in the spectrum and the peak acceleration.
