Abstract | Quality is an important problem faced in many sanitary ware manufacturing systems. This study is concerned with the use of statistical techniques to analyze the quality problem of a sanitary ware factory. Unit production costs for each production stage are first determined. Two production stages - cast shop and kiln department - are considered. For the cast shop, cause-effect diagram is developed. Then the study concentrates on the properties of raw material for cast shop called slip. Multiple regression models are set up to test the significance of slip properties and types of product on defects. All possible subsets technique is done through the multiple regression models to find the effect of each slip property on the defects. Factor analysis model is subsequently used to group the slip properties, and then slip properties in each group are used in multiple regression models to determine their significance in case of reducing the number of slip properties. For kiln department, the contingency table and chi-square test are used to test the significance of kiln and type of product on product quality. After that, Bayes' rule is applied to determine the probability of the defectives appearing. A specially designed computer program is developed for this case. Some discussions and recommendations are made to serve as guidelines towards the possible improvements and further studies of the system in the future. |
