AbstractIn this thesis work, a medium temperature solar system using a 8 m2 parabolic trough concentrator with concentration ratio of 42 is being studied. The thesis report includes the design and working characteristics of the polar mounted system; experimental testing; and performance and economic analyses. For the purpose of conducting realistic long-term performance and economic analyses of PTCs working under tropical climate, a computer model was developed. The 1st law output per year for the existing polar mounted system is 90% of what would be achieved by a 2-axes system, which amounts to 10.9 GJ (or 2 . 1 barrels of oil equivalence) at 210°C and 8.3 GJ (or 1.6 barrels of oil equivalence) at 310°C. The corresponding theoretical 2nd law collector output: are 4. 07 GJ (or 1130 kWh ) and 4. 00 GJ (or 1100 kWh ) respectively. e e The system though financially unattractive, is expected to pay back in terms of 1st law energy investment and output at all possible operating temperatures, and at medium temperature range of 150 to 3S0°C in terms of 2nd law.
