Abstract | A comprehensive mathematical model of water balance type for the assessment of the potential success of rainfall irrigation in Northeast of Thailand is developed in this study. It consists of two submodels for the generation of daily rainfall and for the estimation of evapotranspiration. In arriving at a suitable model for daily rainfall generation, two first order Markov chain models were attempted. They are both capable of reproducing all the important characteristics of the historical data, but the model with two states is preferred because it involves less parameters and no unreliable estimates of transition probabilities. Temperature and sunshine duration hours values are simulated by first applying the Thomas-Fibering model, by taking logarithms and then the exponential of the resulting values to avoid the occurrence of negative values. These data are used in the estimation of daily potential evapotranspiration following the Jensen-Raise formula, The comprehensive water balance model is developed using the daily rainfall and potential evapotranspiration generated by the above models; stress days , effective rainfall and drainage requirements can be determined. All the models are tested using actual data from the Northeast region. Suitable time for planting and the drainage requirement for each crop can be predicted. Computer programs are developed for all the models involved. they are tested, documented and readily available from the Division of Computer Applications, Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand. |
