Abstract | Modifications were incorporated on the IRRI 1 s 5-row manual transplanter (TRl), which made it possible to use conventionally raised seedlings instead of cumbersome 'mat type' seedlings. Other design changes made after the trial runs solved the operational and mechanical problems. The modified transplanter (IA-1) has a better performance with 29 day-old seedlings and 3 point Chinese type pickers, tested on heavy clay soil (12-15 days sedimentation period after the last puddling), with 4-6 cm. water depth. The effective field capacity of the modified transplanter was measured to be 0.014 ha/hour. The average pull required by the machine in a levelled field with 5-7 cm. water depth was found to be 8 kg. The labor requirements for transplanting one hectare (excluding seedling preparation) was about 71 man-hour, thus reducing the labor requirements to about 55% of that of hand transplanting method . Operating costs of both machine and hand transplanting system were computed, At present wage level machine transplanting has a break even level at 2 ha. and 1.1 ha. for single and double cropping per year respectively. |
