Abstract | A water distribution management model for rice crop production was developed for the Magat River Multipurpose Project (Philippines). It utilizes a management technique which considers water distribution at the farm level on a system-wide basis under the constraints of present users and the physical system situation. The model consists of two functions, namely (i) seasonal prediction function and (ii) weekly prediction-correction function. The water balance equation governs the computation of the demand for both functions of the model. To determine how much water is needed, a daily water budget of each farm is performed in conjunction with rainfall, varying water requirements on areas under different farming activities and water status at the farm level. Subsequent delivery correction schedule are determined based on the actual data and information gathered affecting the degree of prediction error. The information from the seasonal prediction function of the model not only predict the total volume of water needed for irrigation but also found to be essential in the decision of location of areas to be irrigated as well as in the planning of cropping schedule. The output of the prediction - correction function of the model ideally, is expected to provide field operation with sequential, single-meaning, and timely directive for water distribution activities. |
