Abstract | The problem of determining the best operating policy for a small storage reservoir or a water impoundment can be solved by means of a statistical model which would simulate a sequence of events based on past records. In this study, the reservoir has only rainwater as its source and is intended not only to irrigate a sugarcane plantation but will also be used for fish production . A model which would generate a 50-year monthly rainfall and monthly number of wet days using a 30-year historical data was developed following the studies made by THOMAS and FIERING (1962). It was observed that statistical properties estimated across the whole historical time series such as mean, variance and autocorrelation coefficient were preserved by the model in the synthesized time series. An empirical water balance model was then developed using these generated data as inputs together with some important watershed parameters. Results from the model indicate that only rainfall during the months of June to December contributes to the total volume of water that can be impounded. It was also found that the total annual volume of water stored was sufficient for crop water requirement of sugarcane planted in a 22l-ha service area and for a whole-year round fish production in the reservoir. |
