AbstractA broadbed and furrow system in parallel with the conventional flat management system have been in use at ICRISAT for five years. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the broadbed and furrow management system on the draft requirement of a moldboard plow and a planter in an Alfisol and a Vertisol. A shear vane and a cone penetrometer were used to determine correlation between soil measurements and draft measurements. The analysis of variance revealed significantly higher specific draft in the flat plots compared to the broaddbed and furrow plots. The difference in the Alfisol cannot be attributed to the management systems, because the soils were found to be considerably different in particle size distribution. In the Vertisol, however, it was concluded that the higher specific draft in flat plots was as a result of the soil management, Planter draft decreased with increased plowing depth in the broadbed and furrow plots, but the planter draft was not found to be influenced in a consistent manner by plowing depth in the flat plots. Both the shear vane and cone penetrometer observations showed a high correlation with the specific draft measurements in the Alfisol. In the Vertisol, because of the wide range of soil conditions, the shear vane readings showed a medium correlation, and the cone penetrometer observations exhibited a poor correlation with specific draft.
