Monitoring the quality of raw paddy in rice mills for estimating the milling yield

AbstractThe principal aim of this study was to find the means of estimating raw incoming paddy to a rice mill irrespective of the quality of treatments received prior to arriving. Paddy samples were collected from 30 rice mills in Saraburi and Pathumt'ani area. A commercial test mill in Saraburi was selected to compare the laboratory results with the actual mill situation. Physical and mechanical properties consisting of moisture content, bulk density, impact strength index, and rupture force of all paddy samples collected were analyzed. The results showed that the head rice yield or related quantity of inflowing paddy into the milling units could be estimated based on the laboratory milling tests. Among the physical and mechanical properties determined the impact strength index was found to give the most significant relationship with relative head yield of paddy collected from the test mill, whereas statistically insignificant relationship existed between the head yield and the afore men tioned physical and mechanical properties of paddy samples collected from other mills. In addition, the results of this study showed that attempts to relate the raw paddy quality and the milling should be made for selected single mill units due to the variations in the paddy variety, drying, storing and handling practices.
