AbstractSeveral factors affecting the airflow resistance of paddy were investigated in detail. These are container size, depth of paddy grain, moisture content and grain size. Airflow resistance increased with a decrease in cross-section of the container. Increasing depths of paddy were found to have higher resistance to airflow, An increase in moisture content decreased airflow resistance of paddy. To investigate the effect of grain size, 25 kg of paddy was sieved to obtain three grain sizes classed according to the sieve that held the grain. Larger grains were found to have lower resistance to airflow, Unseized grain also showed lower resistance to airflow. Grain sizes which showed no appreciable difference in airflow resistance at low moisture content showed a distinct difference at high moisture content. Grain size and moisture content were found to go hand in hand in determining airflow resistance.
