AbstractThis research studies methods to design attribute control charts, p-charts and c- charts, based on economic considerations. Cost Models associated with the use of control charts in production systems are developed. In finding type I and type II errors, the product quality distributions are used instead of the average values. There are two operation categories for such cost models--that is, Process CON and Process NON. Process CON refers to an operation category without a preventive maintenance schedule, and Process NON refers to an 1 operation category with such a preventive schedule. These cost models are based on four cost components--that is, sampling cost, false- alarm cost, undetected shift cost and process adjusting cost. Each combination of control chart parameters, sample size and distance from center line to control limits, is associated with a cost figure. For single production station design problem, an optimal set of parameters may be found from either enumeration of all possible combination sets or by using multidimensional search. In multistage production systems, the design problem is formulated as a dynamic programming problem having: product quality distributions as stage- input and stage-output; sample size and distance from center line to control limits as decision variables, an developed cost models as stage returns . This dynamic programming problem is solved by using the branch-and-bound approach. Two factory cases are used to illustrate the usefulness of the developed model s--that is, casting .of cylinder liners, and casting and machining of V-belt pulleys.
