AbstractAn approach toward regional analysis of wet and dry events was executed using the Theory of Runs coupled with a multivariate rainfall data generation technique. The characteristics of the two events were defined in terms of the runs properties, such as the run-lengths and the run-sums, thus rendering the wet and dry analysis fall into the scope of statistical and probabilistic treatment. Moreover, the multivariate data generation scheme incorporated the inter-dependence between the data, both in space and in time, at various stations in a region into the analysis. This approach was illustrated by a simulation study using the rainfall data at nine stations in Cagayan Valley of the Luzon Island, Philippines. The magnitude, duration and intensity of wet and dry events were obtained for the percentile range of 80- to 120% of the demand level, which was mainly based on agricultural criteria. As a corollary, . extreme phenomena like drought and flood were quantified and then evaluated according to their likelihood of occurrence.
