Abstract | The regional flood frequency analysis is performed in three categories; the determination of the probability distributions of the annual flood peaks of Thailand, the division of flood regions, and the analysis of flood frequency for the divided flood regions. Four probability distributions; namely Gumbel, two-parameter Lognormal, Pearson Type III and Log Pearson Type III, were selected as the candidacy for the distributions of the annual flood peaks. Based upon Chi-square test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and other considerations, the Gumbel distribution was selected for the distribution of annual flood peak series of Thailand. The whole country is divided into 4 well defined flood regions together with undefined region due to lacking of data for analysis. The basin characteristics and .the homogeneity test are the main criteria used in such divisions of the flood regions. For each flood region, the flood frequency analysis was carried out by developing the representative flood frequency expressed in terms of ratios to mean annual flood and by regression analysis of the mean annual flood to the basin characteristics. The representative flood frequency for the region is presented in both graphical or commonly used form and the mathematical form which is considered as new approach in this study. The regression analysis shows very good correlation between the mean annual flood and the drainage area for all divided flood regions with the range of correlation coefficient between 0.82 to 0.92. |
