Abstract | A numerical model is developed using t he finite difference explicit scheme for the two-dimensional turbulent diffusion equation, to analyze the sedimentation of cohesive materials in an estuary. The model incorporates the intrusion of salt water at the lower reaches of the estuary. The phenomenon of flocculation, due to growth of particles, is considered by varying t he settling velocity in the vertical and horizontal directions and the effect of resuspension is also taken into account. The model is applicable to a partially or a well mixed estuary. S nsitivity analysis was carried out initially to gain some knowledge on the order of the parameters used in the model and its effect on the concentration profile . The model was applied to the Pak Phanang Esuary of Southern Thailand which is of a well mixed type and simulation was done for both the dry and wet seasons. The simulated profiles correspond closely with the field profiles. From the simulation it is found that the settling velocity is very sensitive and a slight variation affects the concentration profile considerably. The shear stress corresponding to suspension is al so quite sensitive on the concentration profile . |
