AbstractA method for approximating structure-foundation interaction effects has been developed and implemented into a simplified earthquake analysis of concrete gravity dams. The descried simplified method is equivalent to a response spectrum analysis taking into account only the contributions of the fundamental mode. Both hydrodynamic and foundation interaction effects are included. Structure-foundation interaction has been considered through its influence on the fundamental frequency of vibration of the dam and through the stiffness distribution of both horizontal and vertical springs which idealize the foundation rock. Typical stiffness distributions are obtained and it is shown that these stiffness distributions can be used to model soil- structure interaction effects for general concrete gravity dams having a typical triangular cross section.
