AbstractInventory models developed for operations research problems can be applied to material management in construction projects. However, this application is often difficult due to complexities of demand for material which is uncertain and generally fluctuating. Therefore, certain simplifying assumptions are made to estimate demand rates and other parameters so that the inventory model can be applied to construction management problems. In this study, two cases of the deterministic inventory model, the uniform rate of replenishment and the instantaneous rate of replenishment have been used and all parameters of the model are assumed to be known with certainty. The order sizes for five building materials, viz., cement, sand, reinforcing steel, timber and bricks, pertaining to the New Energy Building Project located on the campus of A.I.T were calculated and the resultant inventory costs determined. It is believed that the system provides a rational basis for material management to give low inventory costs.
