AbstractThe reactivity and pozzolanic characteristics of rice husk ash(RHA) are well studied at AIT and in other parts of the world; the structural performance of RHA concrete on the other hand is yet to be investigated in detail This thesis is concerned with the flexural behaviour of reinforced RHA concrete beams up to failure, A total of five reinforced RHA concrete beams(of 2.4 meter span) have been tested and their various performances compared with five conventional reinforced concrete beams of identical cross section and steel ratios, and tested under identical conditions. A 50% replacement of canent was adopted in the RHA concrete beams. Three steel ratios, namely 1. 037%, 1.427% and 1. 948%, were included. Both short term and sustained(3 months) loadings were used in the experimental programme. The deformation characteristics of RHA concrete beams are found to be slightly inferior to that of the conventional reinforced concrete beams. But the measured deflections of the RHA concrete beams are lower than the values calculated according to the American Concrete Institute Building Code Requirements for Reinforced concrete(ACI 318-77). The ultimate flexural strength of the RHA concrete beams is comparable to conventional reinforced concrete beams. Modulus of rupture for RHA concrete though slightly lower than that of ordinary cement concrete, is still higher than the ACI values~ The ACI code therefore may be used for calculating the short term and medium term deflections, the ultimate flexural strength, the modulus of elasticity and the modulus of rupture of reinforced RHA concrete beams,
