AbstractThe present study considers two important models, Tank model and Kalman Filter, used for the forecasting of river discharges with the help of a computer system. Both these models are applied two rivers, Ping River and Huai Sato River. For the Kalman filter, two approaches, namely the extended Kalman filter and modified extended Kalman filter techniques have been used for the identification of unknown parameters in linear discrete-time systems. The modified extended Kalman filter is an identification technique used for discrete-time linear systems, when noisy measure are taken. It is based on the extended kalman filter and the model reference adaptive approach. Firstly, the extended Kalman filter derived by augmenting unknown parameters as the state variables is modified by neglecting the information between the states and unknown parameters; and secondly, the stability of the modified filter is compensated by the idea of model reference adaptive approach. The analysis results signified that Kalman Filtering technique is a better method for forecasting river discharges, and among the two versions of the Kalman Filter, modified extended method is even better.
