Abstract | A method for the real-time flood forecasting by applying the Kalman filtering technique to the diffusion equation is developed, The diffusion equation is converted into a spatially distributed linear state space model.
To increase the computational efficiency the matrix manipulations a re avoided
by generalization of matrices.
The linear Kalman filter is applied t o the optimal estimation of the state variables (water levels) of a linear system. The extended Kalman filter
is applied while considering the time variation of parameters as unknown.
The Kalman filtering technique proves to b e advantageous for real - time flood forecasting . The filtering is found to improve the forecasting capabilities of the model significantly, The variance of the innovation
series is considerably reduced than that obtained without-utilizing the Kalman filter . |
