AbstractA simplified model for the nonlinear earthquake analysis of reinforced concrete moment-resisting frames is developed. The concept of a substitute earthquake for ground motion is used, considering a two-sine wave acceleration with an excitation frequency identical with the fundamental frequency of vibration of the building. The main problem of the substitute ground motion is to evaluate the maximum acceleration in such a way that good agreement with the exact results can be achieve d. The scaling can be done by comparison of the spectral intensity or the average value of the Fourie amplitude spectrum of the earthquake excitation with the two -sine wave excitation. Five reinforced concrete buildings , three of them with 3, a nd o ne each with 5, and 7 stories are analyzed as example structures. Program DRAIN-2D is employed for the nonlinear time history analysis. The exact earthquake response is obtained by analyzing the buildings with a series of spectrum-compatible accelerograms followed by a statistical analysis of the maximum responses. For the substitute motion, the acceleration scaling factor for each building is evaluate in such a way that the maximum response fits best that of the corresponding earthquake analysis. A correlation between the natural period of vibration of buildings and this scaling factor is given. Finally, the necessary computational steps for a substitute earthquake analysis are listed.
