AbstractA study on farm mechanization was conducted in Jatiluhur , West Java , Indonesia. This study was carried out by a farm survey and direct field measurements of 90 house holds and 117 rice plots, which were grouped into human laborer farms , animal farms and tractor f arms. This study deals with farms mechanization planning and emphasizes land preparation in the rice production system in the Jatiluhur irrigation area. Results indicate that there were no significant differences in the yield among the three categories. The higher the level of mechanization the lower was the use of labor for land preparation . The relationship between yield and energy for land preparation was found to be linear when the yields were corrected for the same level of Nitrogen fertilizer (100 kg/ha). With decreasing number of draft animals agriculture would require more tractors for land preparation. The increase in rice production at 3.4% per year will require the number of tractors to increase at 13% annually. The estimated area prepared by tractors in Jatiluhur will increase from 263 (150,000 ha ) in 1983 to 42% (240,000 ha) in 1987. The sensitivity analysis indicated that the cropping intensity, yield and working days were the most significant factor in determining the additional number of tractor needed.
