AbstractChanges in an acid sulphate soil and rice response under oxidation conditionsuring the growing season by lowering Water table to 10, 20 and 30 cm depth combined with 10, 20 and 30 days dry period were studied in a field experiment in The dry season of 1983. The grain yield and phosphorus and sodium contents of rice plants decreased, while potassium and manganese contents of rice plants increased with the increasing depth of water table and length of dry period. Rice plants contained high amounts of iron and aluminum (around 450 ppm Fe and 270 ppm Al at flowering stage in treatment 30-30). There were no significant differences among treatments in straw yield and iron and aluminum contents of rice plants. Relationships between grain yield and manganese and aluminum were negative with correlation coefficients of r =-0.7 and -0.8. Especially, the grain yield markedly decreased from 5.89 t/ha in controlled treatment to 2.65 t/ha with 30 cm water table depth and 30 days dry period. Iron and manganese concentrations of the top soil increased with increasing dryness. Available phosphorus and water soluble sulphate responded less to dryness. But they seem to be affected by the changes of iron and manganese in soil.
