Abstract | As in most developing countries , rural development issues
still dominate the development policy in Indonesia. Problems
such as poverty, s t agnation, low productivity, l ack of
technological inputs , etc. , characterize rural areas. A
comprehensive study is needed to identity not only the
problems but also the potentialities of a certain rural area in order to find appropriate solutions.
This research study comprises an identification of
problems and potentialities of a village, Desa Dawuan, in
the district of Subang, West Java, Indonesia , where a
Government pilot project in appropriate technology will be
implemented by LIPI, Ban dung . The research is in three
parts . The first part is identification of socio-economic
problems of the target population, the second part is
identification of production problems, especially for rice
cultivation, and t he third part is identification of potential development concerning the population's willingness to try new activities--crop and livestock farming.
Both positive and negative results were identified in the
study , with the observation that some problems and
potentialities were found. The average level of condition
of the population in the area is in the stage where some
improvements are still needed . Most of the population
generally still use traditional equipment for their cultivation activities. The potentiality of the population is that most of t hem wanted to try new activities, crop and livestock farming. Some negative unexpected results were also found , i.e. , illogical relationship between variables used , inconsistencies in the answers. Finally, some
recommendations for future research or study are also
discussed . |
