AbstractThis study is done on a particular glycerin recovery plant in Bangladesh. The plant was suffering from steam diseconomies due to inefficient steam consumption methods and an old inefficient evaporator. To solve this problem, firstly some typical solution has been suggested. subsequently, a nonlinear has been developed to design the evaporator. The objective of the model was to minimize steam consumption per pound of glycerine recovered subject to mass & heat balance equation, mechanical strength of the unit, vapor release characteristics, tube spacing standards, etc. Chemical process equations are nonlinear by nature. Design of chemical process units evolves these nonlinear equations. Design of an evaporator, a typical chemical process unit in a glycerine recovery plant, was tried using nonlinear programming algorithms to solve the formulated model.
