Abstract | The problem of selecting treatment efficiencies along a river basin such that a stream dissolved oxygen (DO) standard is maintained at minimum cost to the whole region, is approached using probabilistic modelling techniques. The first model that is proposed recognizes streamflow as a random variable. The simplicity of the deterministic mesh type formulation is retained but with chance constraints on the quality level in the stream. The deterministic . equivalents of these chance constraints turn out to be linear, thus assuring simple solution techniques. A transformation rule is derived which makes t he extension of this model to a higher number of reaches relatively easy. A second model that is proposed considers wastewater flow too as a random variable. Both models do not require a priori knowledge of initial DO deficits at the top of intermediate reaches of the river, thus removing the main drawback of previous chance constrained approaches in the literature. The model is tested on a 7-reach problem and the results compare very favourably with previous studies. |
