| Abstract | Direct filtration consists of unit operations like coagulation, flocculation and filtration without the use o f sedimentation. The experiment al unit used in this study includes a spiral flocculator and a deep bed filter. The velocity gradient determination is easy and accurate in t he spiral flocculator . Since the floes formed at given velocity gradient and flocculation time are of uniform size , the mathematical formulation between diameter of flocs, velocity gradient and flocculation time becomes precise. The experiments performed with the pilot-scale direct-filtration unit indicate that: -There exists a threshold flocculation time for which filtration run lengths are longest at minimum flocculation requirements. -The less the alum dose , the higher the thresh old flocculation time. -The higher the flocculation gradient , the less the threshold flocculation time . The simulation study performed indicates that the direct filtration can be predicted and optimize d with the help of limited number of pilot-scale direct filtration experiments. |
