Abstract | A totally new approach of Lagrangian formulation is presented for large deformation analysis of continua and structures by the finite element method. In this approach, the deformation of a finite element assemblage is measured by assigning a 'nonphysical' parental element as the reference configuration corresponding to an element in the real domain. It is called the 'pseudo Lagrangian formulation (PLF)' in this study. In the process, a new set of 'pseudo' stress, strain and constitutive tensors are also defined with reference to this 'pesudo' configuration. This will help maintain the general form of governing equations without sacrificing their rigorness and generality. Applications of PLF to small and finite deformation problems indicate that PLF not only serves as an alternative but has certain implementational advantages over the traditional (total or updated) Lagrangian method. |
