Abstract | Mal- development has three consequences: destruction of biodiversity, extinction of 'other cultures' and deterioration of 'other sex'. Unfortunately, in the efforts to protect biodiversity, we also find in some cases the depression of the 'other cultures' and the 'other sex', especially when protected area management follow the North American National Park model. In Xishuangbanna protected area, resettlement program has generated many social impacts on indigenous communities . The researcher hypothesized that co-management should be the best possible solution. The research conducted in two indigenous villages in and around the protected area. The traditional natural resource management systems, indigenous knowledge and indigenous women's role in natural resource management systems were investigated. The findings reveal that there are some relations hip between culture diversity, women's role a nd biodiversity conservation. Thus the ideal approach of conservation is to establish co-effert ally among the three. The research also investigated Xishuangbanna protected area management system. The findings show that cultural bias is a major road-block in the co-effort of conservationists and indigenous people to conserve natural resources. However, the findings also show some positive aspects which indicate possibility of co-management. |
