AbstractA study on human-park interactions for conservation measures of the Javan rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus) was carried out in Ujung Kulon National Park and four adjacent villages from April 29-July 16 by using method adopted from rapid rural appraisal, the 'sondeo'. It emphasized on the Javan rhino as the key biological conservation issue, the most important aspects of the relationship between Ujung Kulon National Park and smTounding human communities, and the existing land-use and socio-economic conditions of the human communities adjacent to Ujung Kulon National Park. The study was conducted by field survey through reconnaissance study, participant observation, key informants interview (85 persons out of which 59 are village households) and group discussions. Maps, facts and figures were collected as secondary data from the contact offices. The adjacent human communities activities inside the Park was found to have several adverse effect on the Javan rhino. Due to land encroachment, poaching, hunting, fishing, livestock grazing and other Park resource extractions, the Javan rhino has suffered from smaller home range to roam and reproduce, reduction of cover, reduction of food, and interspecific competition. In the future the rhino will face more competition for habitat and the population will be extinct. The conflict which arises more since the area was declared a National Park, was found to be increasing due to socio-economic factors of the adjacent villages. The present approach done by the Park to overcome problems was found to be law enforcement, top down approach in buffer zone management and conservation education. Few people participation was observed. Since these have not solved the problems of conflict, therefore strategy for park conservation with people participation was developed. It is hoped that the results of this study will be useful in determining future management of the park especially for enhancement of the Javan rhino and at the same time give benefit to the surrounding human communities
