AbstractA standard element library of MICROFEAP is developed on an 8-bi t Apple II microcomputer for the finite element analysis of linear elastic problems. The elements are 2D/3D truss and beam elements, grid eiement, plane stress/plane strain element, plate element, membra ne element and shell element. The LDain obJective is to investigate the feasibility of solving practical large-scale structurai problems on a microcomputer. Certain aspects of the programming technique are discussed concerning the relati v·ely low processing speed of the microcomputer: and the slow data transfer between incore memory and disk storage. Finally, guidelines for the improvement of MICROFEAP are presented and implemented. As a result, the improved version of MICROFEAP take s only 83.7 minutes to solve a plane frame problem with 525 degrees-of-freedom, which is about 2.5 times faster than the original version.
