Abstract | Maintaining academic integrity will not just benefit the institutions but will benefit the students in the long run for their future careers. The absence of academic integrity from the institutions will have unbearable consequences to the future of higher education. Post pandemic the process of learning and assessing students' work has switched from offline to online mode. Advancement in technology has posed a serious threat to institutions' academic integrity. This research work is a case study of the Asian Institute of Technology(AIT) in order to maintain academic integrity. This research report talks about the various factors that motivates students to be dishonest, various ways through which students engage in misconduct, and the various countermeasures that are being implemented to reduce academic dishonesty. The data was collected by conducting surveys and interviews among the students and faculty members of AIT. Various key findings were captured through this study and also the root cause of students i.e. the motivating factors for them to engage in dishonest practices were also learnt such as Fear of Failure, Lack of knowledge/confidence etc. Few cheating behaviours such as trying to find resources through hard copies to escape plagiarism, students using the excuse of clicking pictures but instead engaging in dishonesty, etc were also acknowledged. It was also noticed that the countermeasures that AIT is implementing are very similar to those in the literature work. Both students and faculty believe that spreading awareness about academic dishonesty practices is a must and should be considered as a part of the curriculum. In the end, this study acts as a checklist or an action point guide for the existing and upcoming faculty members of AIT to consider using different assessment methods and deploy their respective countermeasures to minimize academic dishonesty and preserve academic integrity. |
