Abstract | A soil moisture simulation has been done on a daily basis from 1st January 1957 to 31st December 1980 for khon kaen. The input to the simulation model are daily rainfall, uncorrected reference crop evapotranspiration, penman correction factor, crop coefficients and the planting day. The soil properties for the soils available in Khon Kaen have been considered according to the Soil Survey Division (1973) It has been found that the two crops soybeans and lowland rice behave in a different manner as mentioned below. For Khon Kaen, whcih is a rainfed area, soybeans can be grown under rainfed conditions. The soil considered in the study has the soil unit name "Korat". The allowable water depth above the saturation has been selected as 10mm. The suitable planting period for soybeans is 17th July to 10th August. However 20th July has the highest possibility to make the crop grow at its optimum level. Rice grown in Khon Kaen under rainfed conditions always faces a deficiency of soil moisture, as rice needs a lot of water for its growth. The allowable water depth during the normal growing period is 250mm. The soil selected for the study is "Roi Et". however, the suitable planting period for rice is 27th June to 17the July. If rice is planted on 4th July it has the highest possibility in comparison to other planting dates to grow under rainfed condition. The average rainfall during July to December from 1957 to 1980 is 719mm. with a minimum of 496mm in 1960 and a maximum of 1007mm in 1978 |
