AbstractThe intensification of on-farm facilities to expand irrigated production has a considerable appeal. In Muda Irrigation Scheme the concept has received considerable appeal where tertiary systems are envisaged to improve the existing macro layout system. The crucial issue is as such the actual impact of these facilities on irrigation performance. The performance is view it is the actual production achieved with respect to the projected value. To Show this impact two irrigation blocks are selected for the study area representing with and without project case. The performances were evaluated for the off-season 1984 where irrigation efficiencies are determined from the main canal up to the field application for comparative purposes. A regression model is used to show the impact of this added infrastructural intensity towards adherence to production cost were obtained and compared with the projected value. The results indicate that the improved water management conferred by the provision of a tertiary canal network increases the overall irrigation efficiency although it is only marginal. A further improvement can be achieved if a coordinated water management programme is envisaged at the farm level where an average low application efficiency was observed. The high pace or yield increment projected at the onset of the project is very hard to acknowledge as yields from the study area are significantly lower. However, with the provision of farm roads to provide direct access to the farms has benefited the farmers considerably and is immediately realized after the completion of construction where the infield transport cost was reduced.
