AbstractA nonlinear, deterministic, lumped-parameter model for the combined overland and channel flow phases is developed. The main objective of these study is to optimize the parameters of this nonlinear storage function model. Model parameters could be related to the physical characteristics of the Basin. A Newton-Raphson algorithm coupled with sensitivity analysis is used in the optimization technique. The sensitivity analysis includes techniques of the principal components regression. The parameters are optimized using the above technique for both discharge and storage with realistic initial values chosen. The proposed model can be applied satisfactorily with minimum computational time and effort to an actual system if realistic initial values of parameters are know. The main difficulty is how to use the search technique to find initial values of parameters.
