AbstractA medium term optimal operation problem for multi-reservoir system for irrigation and power is approached through a nonlinear programming technique. To establish the validity of the solution technique and answer, a parallels formulation and solution via linear programming is used. This verification is possible for uniform load condition and a few number of reservoirs with not much complex configuration. These methods are applied to Mae Klong River Basin of Thailand with 3 reservoirs, 2 in series and 1 in parallel and also with a diversion scheme downstream. The conjugate gradient method due to Fletcher and Reeves is one of the best method of nonlinear programming to optimize the multi-reservoir system with large variables. Since, the conjugate gradient method is unconstrained minimization technique the system constraints. of the problem are taken care of by putting penalty functions in the objective function. The results obtained through the nonlinear programming is compared with the results obtained from the linear programming and it is found that both the techniques gave almost identical results.
